Kohei Yoshiyuki

Kōhei Yoshiyuki ( Japanese 吉 行 耕 平 , Yoshiyuki Kōhei ; * 1946 in Hiroshima Prefecture ) is a Japanese fashion and art photographer. He works and lives near Tokyo .

Yoshiyuki became known with the photo series Kōen ( 公園 , Eng. "Park"; 1971-79), in which he photographed Japanese couples making love at night in public parks. Both heterosexual and homosexual couples or groups served as a motif . For this purpose, Yoshiyuki used infrared flash light; the camera eye was exactly in the blind spot of the lovers, so that Yoshiyuki went unnoticed. However, he had to gain the trust of the voyeurs, who can also be seen in the pictures, as they sneak up on the lovers. Some of them also intervene in the sexual situation. Accordingly, in Yoshiyuki's photography the voyeurs are more in the foreground than the actual lovers. He himself stated that "the very act of taking photographs is voyeuristic". The double game of observing observers has its model in the Ukiyo-e , Japanese woodblock prints , which show couples in love walking in traffic in the presence of observers. Yoshiyuki's series was created in Chūō Park in Shinjuku .

The Kōen series was last shown in Germany as a park at the 5th Berlin Biennale for Contemporary Art .
