K'inich Kan Bahlam II was born on May 20, 635 ( long count 9.10.2.6.6, calendar round 2 Kimi 19 Sotz ') as the son of his predecessor K'inich Janaab Pakal I (* 603; † 683) and his wife Tz'akbu Ajaw (* around 612 ?; † 672) born. K'inich Kan Bahlam II ascended the throne on January 7, 684 (12/9/11/12/10, 8 Ok 3 K'ayab) at the age of 48 after his father had helped Palenque to achieve long-lasting stability. K'inich Kan Balam II was able to build on the successful politics of his father. So he continued his extensive building activity and had works of art created that are among the most outstanding of the Mayan Classic.

K'inich Kan Bahlam II was able to achieve military success in 687 when he captured its ruler ("Ruler 2") after a campaign against Palenque's southern neighboring state of Toniná . Palenque probably reached its greatest extent of power at this time. In the last years of his reign this power began to wane again; between 692 and 696 there were several raids on the territory of Palenques by the new ruler of Toniná, K'inich B'aknal Chak .

K'inich Kan Bahlam II died on February 16, 702 (9.13.10.1.5, 6 Chikchan 3 Pop) at the age of 66. He was followed by his brother K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II, under whose rule the conflict with Toniná continued and culminated in his capture in 711.

Construction activity

Almost all of Palenque's significant buildings were built during the reigns of K'inich Janaab Pakal I and his eldest son K'inich Kan Bahlam II. K'inich Kan Bahlam II's first building project consisted of completing his father's tomb, the temple of the inscriptions . He carried out his most extensive building project in the east of Palenque, where a building complex called the "Group of the Cross" was created, which included the Temple of the Cross and the two smaller temples of the Leaf Cross and the Sun as the main building and was completed in 692. Temples XIV and XVII were also built under his rule.
