K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II (* November 2, 644 ; † around 721 ?) Was a ruler ( Ajaw ) of the Maya city of Palenque . He ruled from May 30, 702 to about 711.

Origin and family

K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II was born on November 2, 644 ( long count 9.10.11.17.0, calendar round 11 Ahaw 8 Mak) as the son of K'inich Janaab Pakal I (* 603; † 683) and his Wife Tz'akbu Ajaw (* around 612 ?; † 672) born. He had two brothers: his predecessor K'inich Kan Bahlam II (* 635; † around 702) and Tiwol Chan Mat (* 647; † 680), who never ruled himself, but was the progenitor of all of K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II should become the following ruler.

Reign

The palace

K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II ascended the throne on May 30, 702 (9.13.10.6.8, 5 Lamat 6 Xul) at the age of 57. Apart from his construction activities, little is known about his early reign. For example, he added further extensions to the new palace that his father had begun. A decisive political event has only come down to us in the year 711. That year there was a campaign against Palenque through the neighboring state of Toniná , which led to the capture of K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II. His further fate is discussed controversially. It is certain that he was not murdered immediately after his capture, but instead was held captive. Since no new ruler could be appointed, Toniná installed a governor named Xok . However, two inscriptions from Piedras Negras and Palenque have now been identified that name K'inich K'an Joy Chitam II as ruler for 714 and 718 respectively, so it is possible that Toniná had re-enthroned him, if only as a vassal .
