K-463

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

K-463 was a nuclear submarine of the Soviet Navy and belonged to the Alfa class (Project 705) , which is considered one of the fastest and deepest diving submarine classes.

history

The K-463 was laid down as the last boat of the class at the New Admiralty Shipyard (No. 196) in Leningrad on June 26, 1975. The launch took place on April 30, 1981, and on December 30, 1981, the boat was put into service with the Northern Fleet after the final inspection in Severodvinsk . It was stationed on a naval base in the Sapadnaya Liza fjord . K-463 was part of the combat readiness of the Northern Fleet from 1982 and it was manned by different crews. Until 1987, the boat and crew received several awards, before the K-463 was removed from the fleet list on April 19, 1990 and scheduled for scrapping.

Possible accident

In 1986 the boat is said to have had a reactor accident, according to American sources, but this is not confirmed by Russian sources. Thereafter it is said to have been temporarily shut down and as one of two boats of the class to have been equipped with a pressurized water reactor similar to that of the boats of the Victor class (according to project 671W or according to the English transcription 671V , incorrectly also called 671B ).

Whereabouts

K-463 was laid up near Severodvinsk and scrapped. The reactor section was separated, sealed and towed to Sajda Bay in 1995 for interim storage .
