The Sayda Bay (also Saida Bay ) is a western branch of the Kola Bay about 60 kilometers north of Murmansk .
At the exit of the bay is the city of Gadschijewo with the naval base Gadschijewo . The bay serves as a ship cemetery and contains the largest storage facility for disused reactors from nuclear submarines . As part of a closed city of the Alexandrovsk region, the bay is only accessible with a special permit.
nuclear waste
A long-term interim storage facility for radioactive waste from the Northern Fleet is located here . Germany financed part of the construction costs under the G8 program with around 588 million euros. Federal Minister of Economics Michael Glos opened the facility on July 18, 2006 . 93 disused reactors are now stored there (as of 2016).
