KAIRA ( Kilpisjärvi Atmospheric Imaging Receiver Array) is a scientific measuring instrument from the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory ( University of Oulu ). This broadband radio receiver is used for exploring the atmosphere and near-earth space as well as for astronomical research.

KAIRA is based on LOFAR antenna and signal processing technology and can be used both independently as a passive receiver and as a receiver for the EISCAT VHF radar located in Tromsø , Norway . KAIRA was built to develop technologies for the modular EISCAT_3D radar system, but KAIRA also enables a variety of innovative research and technological development. KAIRA was funded by the University of Oulu, the European Regional Development Fund and the municipality of Sodankylä. The total cost was 1.263 million euros.

KAIRA has been in operation since 2012.
