The KAS 13-17 were three-axle steam locomotives of the Altenaer Schmalspur-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (KAS), from 1922 the Altenaer Eisenbahn (KAE) district. They were built by Hohenzollern in Düsseldorf in 1907, 1911 and 1912 .

history

From 1907 to 1912, the Altenaer Schmalspur-Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (KAS) district in the Sauerland received five locomotives from the Düsseldorf machine works Hohenzollern to expand the locomotive fleet, which largely represented a further development of the existing locomotives 1 to 9 from the years 1887/1888. The boiler was larger and the locomotives now had a steam dome. There were two sand containers on the kettle. The bell was placed in front of the chimney. The first locomotive was delivered in 1907, followed by two each in 1911 and 1912.

Like all KAE locomotives, they had names: CARL, ERNST, HERMANN, RUDOLF and HANS. The numbers were written next to them, but they were missing on the CARL (13) locomotive. The locomotives were used on the steep routes Lüdenscheid – Altena and Lüdenscheid – Werdohl. While most of the locomotives were decommissioned between 1956 and 1958, the HERMANN locomotive received another general inspection in 1962 and, together with the V 15 diesel locomotive, handled the remaining KAE traffic between Lüdenscheid and Brüninghausen until 1967.

Locomotive Carl of KAE at Altena station

Locomotive 13 CARL was erected as a memorial after the KAE was discontinued in 1961, first at the Steinerne Brücke station, and later at Altena station . In autumn 2016 it was sold to a private person who would like to have it refurbished in working order. The locomotive 15 HERMANN came to the German Railway Association in Bruchhausen-Vilsen in 1968 . There it was refurbished, received a new boiler and was operational again in 1979. After another lengthy refurbishment, it has been back in operation since May 1, 2016.

Constructive features

Because the tracks were mostly on the road, the locomotives, like all KAE vehicles, were particularly narrow. The frame was reinforced compared to the earlier locomotives. The middle axis had side play. The locomotives had flat slide valves and an Allan control. There were two non-suction Strube injectors for feeding the boiler and a Hohenzollern type safety valve on the boiler. The fire box was made of copper. The water boxes were to the side of the boiler, the coal was housed to the left of the boiler. Originally the cabs had no doors, they were only attached later. A special feature were the angular, rounded outwardly rounded buffer plates used at KAE, which were intended to prevent overbuffering even in tight bends. Due to the large overhangs, they had a rough run. The uphill stretches made them high in coal consumption, but they were also powerful.
