Gerhard Moll (born August 17, 1933 in Vormwald ; died July 31, 2015 in Siegen ) was a German engine driver and author. He advocated the preservation of historic locomotives early on and became known for the Prussian T 3 that he had reconditioned .

Life

After attending school and an apprenticeship as a locksmith , Moll joined the German Federal Railroad (DB) in 1953 . Initially working as a factory worker, he soon became a stoker and, from 1963, a locomotive driver at the Erndtebrück depot . After working on steam locomotives, he later also took over diesel locomotives and electric locomotives as part of the structural change at the railway . Moll remained with DB as a locomotive driver until he retired in 1990.

Moll was also interested in the railroad in his spare time, especially in historical locomotives. As early as 1967 he became one of the first members of the German Society for Railway History (DGEG) founded that year . At the end of the 1960s he bought a Prussian T 3 and worked on it in his spare time. The German Federal Railroad allowed him to place the locomotive in the Erndtebrück depot. It later came into the possession of the DGEG and is part of the holdings of the Neustadt / Weinstrasse Railway Museum . From there it is used on the cuckoo track . Moll's commitment to the history of the railways meant that further rare locomotives could be temporarily stored in Erndtebrück until permanent housing could be guaranteed. These included a Prussian T 9.1 and the last remaining DB class 66 locomotive . The locomotives later went to the DGEG museums. In addition, Moll was also active in museum railways and was involved with the German Railway Association (DEV) in Bruchhausen-Vilsen in the reconditioning of the "Franzburg" locomotive ( Lenz type i ) and others.

In addition to his professional activity, Moll published various specialist books, including those on the T 3 and T 9 series and the locomotives of the Jung locomotive factory . In addition, specialist articles were created for the Eisenbahn-Kurier , Lok Magazin and other magazines.

On April 18, 1996, Gerhard Moll was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his commitment to the preservation of historic railway vehicles . The DGEG made him an honorary member.
