The two new class 66 locomotives were passenger train tank locomotives of the Deutsche Bundesbahn .

The 66 series was intended for express freight train service and passenger train service on the main and branch lines of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. A top speed of 100 km / h and a wheel set weight of only 15 t offered the best conditions for this. It was supposed to replace the regional railway types of the 38.10 , 78 and 93 series . Due to the increasing competition from diesel locomotives , the two examples of the 66 series remained individual pieces, although they met all expectations and were considered a very successful construction. The class 66 was the penultimate steam locomotive series that was built as part of the DB new build program.

The vehicles were equipped with a welded high-performance boiler with a combustion chamber , roller bearings, a mixer preheater and a welded sheet metal frame. Since great emphasis was placed on the working conditions of the engine driver and stoker , the 66 series had a completely enclosed driver's cab , skylight windows, underfloor heating and padded seats with backrests. From autumn 1957, both locomotives were equipped with facilities for push-pull operation.

The locomotive with the road number 66 001 was retired in 1967 due to an engine failure and parked in Giessen, the second example was retired in 1968.
