Kishan Maharaj ( Hindi किशन महाराज Kiśan Mahārāj ; born September 3, 1923 in Kabir Chaura , † May 4, 2008 in Khajuri ) was an Indian tabla player.

Life

Maharaj came from a family of tabla players who cultivated the Benares-Gharana style for generations . He was tutored in classical tabla by his father and, after his death, by an uncle, and began performing at the age of eleven. In addition to the tabla, he also mastered other classical Indian instruments, including the sitar and sarod . He worked with well-known musicians such as Omkarnath Thakur , Faiyaz Khan , Bhimsen Joshi , Ravi Shankar , Bade Ghulam Ali Khan , Girija Devi , Ali Akbar Khan and accompanied the dancers Shambhu Maharaj , Birju Maharaj and Sitara Devi as a soloist . He appeared in the films Banaras Utsav (2003), Maestros Perform (with flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia , 2006) and When the Time Stood Still (with sitar player Vilayat Khan , 2006) and released the albums Echoes of Benaras (with Bismillah Khan , 1991) and Sympatico (with Shivkumar Sharma , 2002). Maharaj's disciples included Sukhvinder Singh Namdhari , Balkrishna Iyer , Ramesh Mishra and Sandeep Das , among many others . With the Padma Shri (1973) and the Padma Vibhushan (2002) he received two of the highest honors of the Indian government.
