Bhimsen Joshi
Bhimsen Joshi (born February 4, 1922 in Gadag , † January 24, 2011 in Pune ) was a singer of North Indian classical music in the Khyal style.
Joshi was introduced to bhajan singing by his mother as a child and later became a student of Sawai Gandharva . He has performed as a singer since the age of 19 and became famous as an interpreter of Hindustan ragas and bhajans in India and internationally. He was a singer with All India Radio and recorded numerous songs that appeared on more than 20 CDs. He received many awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Ratna , the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan , the Padma Vibhushan and finally in 2009 the Bharat Ratna , the highest civil order in India.
