The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Europe Forschungsgesellschaft mbH (KIST) is the only branch of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology outside of South Korea . The KIST was founded in 1996 by a German-Korean state treaty and is based in Saarbrücken . On the campus of Saarland University , with which it has signed a cooperation agreement, a research building has been built that includes offices and laboratories as well as workshops and a technical center.

The tasks of KIST Europe are as follows:

  • Research in the EU area: research activities on the globalization of Korean science and technology
  • KOREA / EU cooperation center in the field of technology, exchange and training of personnel, information acquisition in science and technology
  • Advising the industry: Supporting Korean companies in their activities in Europe.

KIST Europe cooperates with the Saarland University in the fields of pharmacy (Ursapharm laboratory) and medical technology, with the Saarland University Hospital in Homburg in the field of biology and many other cooperations in Germany and Europe (Twente University, Ghent University, Innsbruck University, Erasmus -University of Rotterdam, University of Glamorgan, University Hospital Marburg, etc.).

Research at KIST is currently divided into the following areas:

  • Nano-Engineering Group:
The focus is on microfluidics - also in connection with magnetism, lab-on-chip, identification of DNA / RNA, production of instruments for clinical diagnostics
  • Convergence Bioscience Group:
The focus is on immunotherapy, drug delivery as well as drug, biomaterial and biosensors development as well as the provision of innovative, new therapeutics and diagnostics for biomedical and pharmaceutical use
  • Environment & Energy Center:
The focus is on environmental risk assessment of the toxicity of chemical mixtures and artificial nanomaterials, determination of ecotoxicity and control of green algae, compliance with environmental regulations (REACH, GHS, K-REACH) as well as production and storage of "green energy"
  • Cooperation & Policy Center for Future Technology:
The focus is on the development of innovative solutions for social problems in Korea and Europe by establishing strategic concepts and technical solutions for safe use in Korean and European industry (e.g. planning European research projects such as "Horizon 2020" and "EUREKA" )
