history

The transmission frequency 102.3 MHz was originally licensed to the KFOX-FM station in Long Beach, which broadcast a country format. In 1965 the African American businessman John Lamar Hill from South Los Angeles bought the station and organized a relaunch as KJLH with a "Black Radio Format" (smooth R&B, soul, jazz and MOR ). The station moved to Los Angeles.

In 1979 Hill sold his station to musician Stevie Wonder for $ 2 million. Wonder founded the operating company Taxi Productions especially for this purpose. He gave the station the motto resulting from the callsign " K indness, J oy, L ove & H appiness."

When one of the local competing channels, KDAY , switched to playing more classic hip-hop in 2009, KJLH also added more hip-hop to its program, but kept the music genre Urban Adult Contemporary.

KJLH is the oldest African American-owned radio station on the US west coast.
