The Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologische Instituut ( German  Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute , KNMI for short ) is a Dutch institute that provides, among other things, the daily weather forecast . The institute reports to the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat ( Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management ).

It was founded on January 31, 1854 by royal decision of King Willem III. the Netherlands. Professor CHD Buys Ballot , first executive director, chose the Sonnenborgh observatory in Utrecht as the location . In 1897 the institute moved to De Bilt .

The main tasks of the KNMI are weather forecasting and the monitoring of weather , climate , air quality and seismic activities . The KNMI is also the national research and information center for meteorology, climate, air quality and seismology, often in connection with natural gas production . In 2007 the institute employed around 500 people.
