Harness list

KBL ( K abel B aum L iste ) is a standard for an XML file format for the uniform digital description of a cable harness - in the form of plugs, cables, line protection elements, fastenings, etc. Ä.
This standard was published by the VDA as recommendation 4964 in the first version in 2005 and continuously developed. The current version is from July 2018. In this update the documentation has been improved and new features have been introduced. The last revision is KBL 2.5 .

The development of the KBL is driven by the users. In the project group "Vehicle Electric Systems Workflow Forum (VES-WF)" of the prostep ivip association, employees of the leading automobile manufacturers in Germany and their wiring harness suppliers are represented.

Although a German initiative, the KBL has received international attention. The term “cable harness list” is also used in English-speaking countries. The term “Harness Description List” is used less.

In connection with standardization, the KBL aims at the cable harness with all data and information required for its development and production. Components of an on-board network that lie outside the cable harness, such as sensors, actuators and control units, are not treated in terms of their function, but rather as black boxes.

The KBL is used productively throughout the German automotive industry for the exchange of data between manufacturers and suppliers. The KBL also serves as a process format in the in-house wiring system development processes.

The KBL was developed into the VEC . The VEC offers significantly more functionality and allows the description of the digital life-cycle product model of the on-board network.
