VEC ( V ehicle E lectric C ontainer ) is a standard for digital exchanges and digital delivery of on-board network data with XML . The focus is on the technical description of cable harnesses including the parts installed in the on-board networks such as plugs, cables, fastening elements, grommets, fuse and relay holders or cable ducts. The VEC defines all the data that are generated and consumed by the authoring systems used in on-board network development (library systems, circuit diagram editors, layout generators, etc.). The definition is in the language of the application. The guideline was that a wiring system developer could do something with the terminology, objects and attributes of the VEC and not need the IT specialist as an interpreter. Developed jointly by the leading automobile manufacturers in Germany and their wiring harness suppliers, the VEC guarantees that it is largely free of company or tool-specific terminology. The VEC effectively forms the lingua franca of on-board network development in order to link the development systems involved. It includes the technical specification of wiring harness components including the meaning of attributes and the definition of value lists.

In addition, the VEC defines the networking of components at different levels of abstraction (from electrical engineering to concrete physical interconnection via lines) or the topological description of an on-board network with the placement of components and the laying of lines. The VEC also offers support in the early development phases if the specific components with a part number are not yet known. Components that fulfill certain functions and are connected to other components via a bus can be cited as an example. All information relevant to the selection and use of a component can be described with the VEC. In the case of connectors, the detailed structure of connector housings, slots, chambers, contacts, etc. is defined. The components are described with their properties such as contact geometry, contact system, cable connection, cross-section information or coding.

The VEC succeeds the KBL standard established in automotive vehicle electrics . While the KBL was clearly geared towards the description of individual cable strands, the developers of the VEC focused on the physical on-board network as a whole.

The current version 1.2 is published as prostep ivip recommendation PSI-21 and VDA recommendation 4968.
