Cabinet Holyoake I

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cabinet Holyoake I was formed in New Zealand on September 20, 1957 by Prime Minister Keith Holyoake of the New Zealand National Party and replaced the Cabinet Holland II . It was in office until December 12, 1957, when it was replaced by the Nash cabinet .

On September 20, 1957, the previous Prime Minister Sidney Holland resigned almost two months before the elections for health reasons and was replaced by the previous Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Keith Holyoake. However, Holland remained in government as a minister with no portfolio.

Holyoakes National Party suffered a defeat in the elections on November 30, 1957 and was only able to achieve 39 seats of the 80 seats in the House of Representatives with 44.21 percent . The New Zealand Labor Party with its top candidate Walter Nash came up with 48.31 percent and moved with 41 members to the House of Representatives, whereupon Walter Nash became the new Prime Minister on December 12, 1957. The Social Credit Party, the third strongest force, could not have a member of parliament despite its 7.21 percent.
