Kadamba
The Kadamba were an ancient Indian dynasty based in the capital Banavasi in what is now the state of Karnataka . a. the founding of Goa is attributed.
history
The founder of the empire is the Brahmin Mayurasvarman (ruled approx. 345-360), who as a student in Kanchipuram (the capital and university town of Pallava) was bumped into by a nobleman and then became a robber. Finally he was recognized as king by the Pallava , who had got into distress under Visnugopa (ruled approx. 350–355) , but subsequently the Kadamba remained vassals of the Pallava for a long time .
The Kadamba empire had its peak under Kakusthavarman (ruled approx. 425-450) and Santivarman (ruled approx. 450-475), whereby the kings were related by marriage to the Vakataka and had now finally broken away from the Pallava. However, under King Mrigesavarman (ruled approx. 475-488) it split into two lines (separation of his uncle Krishnavarman in the south). Despite new successes under King Ravivarman (ruled approx. 500-538), the Kadamba were so weakened by this internal conflict that shortly after the succession to the throne was passed to the younger line under Krishnavarman II (ruled approx. 550-565) the up-and-coming Chalukya assumed supremacy.
In the late 10th century, the Kadambas again created a humble empire in the Goa area .
Culture
Apart from a few inscriptions, a number of copper coins (→ weblink) and a temple in Talagunda , there are no known cultural legacies from the Kadamba period.
