The Kaffelstein tunnel is a former railway tunnel on the Lohr – Wertheim line , which was closed in 1978. The length of the tunnel in Kreuzwertheim , which begins 400 meters in front of the former train station, is 231 meters.

history

Construction of the tunnel began in 1880 and was completed in October 1881. It is the second of a total of three tunnels on the Lohr – Wertheim railway line (next to the Bettingberg Tunnel and the Schlossberg Tunnel Wertheim ) that were dismantled in 1980/81. A stone lion's head was placed above both portals, and the Bavarian coat of arms was located above the eastern portal, the whereabouts of which are unknown. The tunnel is located in Kreuzwertheim on Bahnhofstrasse, a few hundred meters in front of the former train station.

In 1983 the western portal was walled up and the driveway filled, and in 1990 houses were built. After that, the remaining eastern portal of the tunnel was blocked by a grille to prevent entry into the tunnel.

At the beginning of January 2018, Deutsche Bahn announced that it wanted to completely fill the tunnel. Work on this began that same year.
