Kai Savelsberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kai Savelsberg (* 1975 in Aachen ) is a German painter and stage painter .

Live and act

After graduating from high school for design , Savelsberg completed an apprenticeship as a stage painter at the Theater Aachen from 1993 to 1996 . Since then he has been working as a freelance artist and until 2013 managed a studio in Monschau . He then moved to Aachen, where he runs his own studio on Rudolfstrasse and for a while ran the “Galerie Freitag 18:30” together with Robert Mertens. Together with his wife Mavi Garcia, he also runs the concept room “The Cell” on Lothringer Straße.

Savelsberg's works have been shown at more than 60 exhibitions at home and abroad, including in Belgium and the Netherlands as well as Finland, Sweden and the USA. In 2011 he received the art prize of the Johann Isaak von Gerning Foundation as part of the 4th Bad Homburg Autumn Salon . As a stage painter, he now appears less frequently, most recently in January 2017 for the musical "Exodus - freedom lies in you" by Clemens Amendt and Markus Kamps.

In addition, Savelsberg supplements his painterly works with poems , prose and aphorisms and has so far published three text volumes with numerous illustrations of his own . He also tries to link images and lyrical thoughts, for example in the concept exhibition “Silent Mail”, in which envelopes hanging from the ceiling with thoughts on art correspond with the postage stamp images painted on the light gray walls.

When creating his works of art, Savelsberg has so far not committed himself to a specific technique, but always creates new forms. In addition to standard painting on canvas or mixed techniques on nettle cloth , he prefers to work on wooden panels, doors or windows, old wallpaper and newspapers as well as old floor coverings and other found objects with ink, watercolors or oil paints. In many of his pictures he uses color to a limited extent and instead consciously uses numerous shades of gray. To this end, he covers some works with gauze or foil, which is intended to create a suggestive and mystical impression on the viewer.
