The Kaiser Wilhelm Foundation, named after Wilhelm I , for members of the German Reich postal administration was formed from the surpluses of the administration of the French state posts by the German Reich Post during the Franco-German War (1870/71) .

purpose

Its purpose was to promote the welfare of the members of the Deutsche Reichspost and to grant their families or surviving dependents " support to improve moral and intellectual education and economic well-being". All members of the administration, including those no longer in service, were eligible for consideration from the foundation. The foundation's interest and other donations resulted in:

  1. Granted travel grants to civil servants to expand language skills in foreign countries or to study transport facilities abroad,
  2. Supports relatives of civil servants in their studies at universities or higher education institutions through grants,
  3. Allowances for admission to educational institutions, orphanages, pension schemes, or hospitals are allocated to surviving dependents.

history

The Reich Post Office had achieved a surplus during the war with France from the perception of the country postal service in the occupied French territory parts. By the imperial law of June 20, 1872, the German Emperor transferred 300,000 marks (diesem) from this surplus to establish a foundation as described above. According to the Association of Post and Telegraph by Kingdom Act of 4 March 1876, the provisions of the statutes for the Foundation by Imperial Order of the same date were also to officials of sufficient Telegraph Administration extended. By 1890, the assets invested in interest-bearing securities, mortgages and security deeds had grown to ℳ 586,350, which today would correspond to approximately 3,977,974 euros. Due to inflation , it was ℳ 4,243,175 (EUR 1,194,101) in 1922. From the interest, around ℳ 40,000 could be used annually for travel and study grants and just as much for support and other purposes. Since the currency collapse in 1923, the foundation has lacked any income. Study grants, support, etc. could no longer be granted since then.
