The Schiwasee ( English Lake Shiva or Lake Shewa ) is located in the northeast of the Afghan province of Badachschan .
geography
The 14 km² lake is located in the northern Hindu Kush at an altitude of 3100 m . It was created in historical times by several landslides that interrupted the course of the Arakht , a left tributary of the Pandsch . Since then, the lake has been dammed up by a 400 m wide natural dam, the crest of which is 80 m above the lake water level. The Schiwasee has no surface drainage. However, lake water seeps through the natural dam. The 12 km long lake extends over two mountain valleys. The maximum water depth of the Schiwa lake is 270 m.
