The term imperial history can generally refer to a history of the ancient Roman or medieval Byzantine or Roman-German emperors . Examples of ancient imperial stories are

- various late antique imperial stories such as:
- the so-called Enmann Imperial History ,
- the imperial story of Aurelius Victor ,
- the work of Eutropius .
- the anonymous Epitome de Caesaribus ,

- the anonymous and highly controversial Historia Augusta .
For the Middle Ages, the work of the Byzantine Michael Psellos and the high mediaeval imperial chronicle should be mentioned.
