Oeconomia christiana

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oeconomia Christiana is an early modern home teaching, written by the "Thuringian reformer" Justus Menius . Martin Luther wrote a 13-page preface.

The entire title of the “Oeconomia Christiana” reads: “To the high-born Furstin / Fraw Sibilla Hertzogin zu Sachsen / Oeconomia Christiana / das ist / von Christlicher Haushaltung Justi Menij '. With a nice preface. ”Justus Menius wrote the 225-page work in Gotha in 1529 and had it printed in Wittenberg in the same year as an independent font. In 1529 alone five editions appeared, another nine in the course of the 1530s. 17 editions are known by 1556, i.e. in 17 years. None of Luther's marriage writings were published so often during this period.

The “Oeconomia Christiana” is part of the Lutheran marriage literature, which very often also deals with the household. At the same time, it represents one of the components from which later, from the end of the 16th century, the (Protestant) house fathers literature will be formed. According to Luther, marriage and the household (including children and servants) based on it, together with the status of preachers (church) and the authority ("state" area), form the basis of the social order established by God himself in creation ( Lutheran Three-tier teaching ). The celibate classes of religious orders and the clergy have no place in this order. Hence the great importance that the Lutherans attached to marriage and household in the disputes with the papacy: It was the counter-model to the “unnatural” celibacy with which, in their opinion, the Catholic clergy wanted to prove their godliness in a self-arrogant way. The “Oeconomia Christiana” of Justus Menius presents the Lutheran home teaching coherently for the first time and had an enormous influence on the later Lutheran writings on this topic.
