Calendar by Zou

The calendar of Zou is a limestone plateau on which a perpetual calendar is carved. With the help of this calendar, the day of the week could be determined for any given day. It was also used to determine the Orthodox Easter date . The inscription dates from the end of the 17th century and was found in the small town of Zou, which is about six kilometers south of Sitia on Crete . The plaque is now in the Heraklion Historical Museum .

inscription

Two tables are shown on the stone tablet. There is also a round graphic in the upper right corner, but it has been poorly preserved. The left table is used to determine the Easter date and the right the day of the week.

Weekday table

The top 4 lines of the weekday table show the years of the solar cycle . Since the Easter date in the Orthodox Church is determined on the basis of the Julian calendar , this is 28 years. In the table you can determine the weekday of the first day of the month for each month of the respective year. 1 stands for Sunday, 2 for Monday, 3 for Tuesday, 4 for Wednesday, 5 for Thursday, 6 for Friday and 7 for Saturday.

To determine the day of the week, one has to subtract 1408 from the respective year. Divide the number by 28 and determine the remainder. The remainder corresponds to the year of the solar cycle, with a remainder of 0 corresponding to the year 28. You can now read the day of the week from the table.

Easter date

The top 4 lines of the Easter date table also show the years of the solar cycle. The first column is the golden number . It indicates the year of the 19-year lunar cycle . The second column contains the date of the spring full moon . Numbers from 21 to 31 represent a date in March and numbers from 1 to 18 represent a date in April. The table shows the respective date on Easter Sunday . The Easter cycle given here extends from 1409 to 1940.

In order to determine the date of Easter Sunday you have to subtract 1408 from the respective year. The number obtained is divided by 19 and 28 respectively and the remainder is determined . The remainder obtained when dividing by 19 corresponds to the golden number, with a remainder of 0 corresponding to the golden number 19. The remainder obtained by dividing by 28 corresponds to the year of the solar cycle, with a remainder of 0 corresponding to the year 28. Now you can read the date of Easter Sunday from the table.

For example, if you want to determine the Easter date for the year 1700, you subtract 1408 from 1700 and get 292. If you divide 292 by 19 you get a remainder of 7. If you divide 292 by 28 you get a remainder of 12. The 12th The year of the solar cycle can be found in the first column. In the 7th line of the first column you find March 31st as the date of Easter Sunday in the year 1700.
