The Kalkkop Crater is an impact crater in South Africa . The crater is located on the area of a private farm about 50 kilometers south of the town of Graaf Reinet in the Eastern Cape Province . It got its name from two Afrikaans words : "Kalk", which means limestone , "kop" means head.

The impact took place around 250,000 years ago in the Pleistocene and created a crater 640 meters in diameter and a few hundred meters deep; today it is filled with sediments and is still 88 meters deep. Only an eroded ring is visible on the surface.
