On December 30, 1982, Kalso competed in his first ski jumping World Cup . He finished jumping in Oberstdorf on 46th place. The following World Cup competitions were also less successful. It was not until January 21, 1984 that he was able to jump into the points and the top 10 for the first time with 6th place in Sapporo, Japan . On March 23, 1985 he was able to increase this performance and landed in Štrbské Pleso on the 4th place. He reached his first podium with the 3rd place in jumping in Thunder Bay on December 6th, 1986. Less than a month later he was even able to achieve 2nd place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . He ended the 1986/87 season in 16th place in the overall World Cup standings. It was his most successful but also last active ski jumping season.
