Paul Spang

Paul Spang (born July 6, 1922 in Echternach , † March 15, 2009 in Luxembourg ) was a Luxembourg historian and archivist .

Life

After studying in Leuven , Zurich and Paris , Spang taught history and languages ​​at the Lycée classique in Echternach from 1950 to 1963. Then he was appointed to the newly created position of director of the National Archives, which he held until his retirement in 1987. He was also head of the historical department of the "Institut Grand-Ducal". He was the initiator of an important Willibrord exhibition in 1958. In 1980 he organized an exhibition in the National Archives on the Codex Aureus Escorialensis , a 1046 commissioned by Emperor Heinrich III. Gospels produced in Echternach .

A number of his publications were devoted to the history of his hometown, one focus was the Echternach scriptorium . In 1998 he was therefore awarded the “mérite culturel” from the city of Echternach.
