List of apple varieties |
The Kalterer Bohemian is a variety of the cultivated apple ( Malus domestica ). Alternatively used names are Mantuan , Apple from Mantua and Rosa Mantovano .
It is considered a very good winter apple for fresh consumption. Engelbrecht described its shape as flat-round, medium-bellied with uneven halves, its color as light greenish-yellow, later almost waxy yellow with a sun-shining red coating without stripes and its taste as noble rose apple-like, mildly vinous and not much less sweet.
At times the Kalterer Böhmer was the main variety of commercial cultivation in South Tyrol . In 1929 it represented 28 percent of the total delivery volume. With the increase in apple cultivation in South Tyrol, the cultivation of this variety continued to grow well into the 1950s. After that, however, the Kalterer Böhmer was displaced by other varieties and is no longer relevant in commercial cultivation today.
