history
The Rottenburg was originally located above the valley floor , but the name Rotholz is documented as early as 1180. At that time it was owned by the Lords of Rottenburg , ministries of the Counts of Andechs . It is documented as a castle in 1263 as Castrum Rotenbruchì . The name Thurnegg appears later , as a defense tower, as the castle was initially called.
Rotholz Castle was built from 1575 to 1585 by the builder Alberto Lucchese as a hunting lodge with a zoo for Archduke Ferdinand II . From 1704 to 1706 a renovation was carried out by the Counts of Tannenberg . The castle remained in the possession of the Tannenberg until 1848. From 1848 to 1860 the castle was owned by the rulers, from 1860 to 1889 by the Bishop of Brixen , and since 1889 owned by the State of Tyrol .
