Castle ruins
To the east of Stanz bei Landeck and above the Perjen district of the city of Landeck , the castle ruins are difficult to access and built on a rocky outcrop on the mountainside. The location of the castle made it possible to monitor the traffic routes into the Vinschgau , over the Arlberg and the Fernpass . Schrofenstein was also temporarily the seat of the court. At first it was the seat of ministerials from Chur and from the 13th century the seat of the Tyrolean Schrofenstein family until they died out in 1546. After that, the castle belonged to the family of the Counts and Princes of Trautson for a long time . The castle began to decline in the second half of the 19th century. Today only the twelve meter high keep , which was renovated by the private owner, remains .
About 50 meters below the castle you can still find the remains of a stable belonging to the castle. The service yard was further out in the direction of Stanz.
