history

The documents mention the von Münichau family, who built the castle in the 15th century, earlier than the castle itself. The castle chapel was consecrated in 1469. The lords of Münichau were ministerials first of the Bamberg monastery, mentioned from 1314, and then the dukes of Bavaria. They died out in Bavaria in the first half of the 16th century, where they moved when Kitzbühel came to Austria.

The Lords of Freyberg auf Hohenaschau sat here from 1523 to 1538 . At that time Münichau was a center of the Anabaptist movement , as the castle mistress Helene von Freyberg had accepted this belief and strongly supported it. However, in the end she was only able to escape the sad fate of her confreres by fleeing. After their return to the Catholic faith, their sons received the confiscated goods back from King Ferdinand. From 1538 Münichau was owned by Mattheus Lang von Wellenburg. He is likely to have owed his position as councilor and regent of Innsbruck and the castle to his cousin, the Cardinal Archbishop of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg . From 1580 to 1921 the noble seat belonged to the lords and later Counts of Lamberg .

The five-storey building, damaged in a fire in 1914, was restored by 1921 - one floor lower. There was a major renovation in 1957 when the Harisch brothers converted the residence into a castle hotel. Münichau Castle is still a hotel today.
