Matzen Castle

The Schloss Matzen , including Castle Matzen , stands on a low hill tongue in the Tyrolean town of Alpbach .

history

The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1278. It is a foundation of the ducal Bavarian ministerial Freundsberg and remained in the family's possession until 1468. Thereafter, the owners changed in quick succession: from 1521 to 1550 Fieger , 1564 Ilsung , from 1589 to 1657 Fugger , from 1658 to 1684 Pock, from 1734 to In 1873 under Pfeiffersberg the castle began to fall into disrepair. After 1873, the castle was restored with W.  Baillie-Grohmann and expanded into a palace.

Castle

The complex shows itself with an elongated north and south wing, a short western connecting wing and in the east with the round six-storey keep. In the lower courtyard there are rows of four - storey groin - arched arcades with round and octagonal marble columns from the second quarter of the 16th century. On the ground floor of the south wing there is an entrance hall with a beamed ceiling. A late Gothic coat of arms and tendril painting around 1500 was uncovered in 1968. After 1873, the living rooms were decorated with paneling and inventory mostly from Tyrol and Upper Austria. Individual door frames made of Hagau marble , chamfered in late Gothic style, have been preserved from the old building.

Castle chapel

In the north wing there is a two-story east-facing chapel. The chapel was mentioned in a document in 1470. There is a stucco ceiling with a cornice from 1668. The altar with a wooden crucifix is from 1500 and is attributed to Veit Stoss and has been in the Tyrolean State Museum (TLMF) since 1978 .

More buildings

The farm yard right next to the castle dates from the 1st half of the 16th century and is now the Matzen Inn . It is also a listed building.

Neumatzen Castle is right at the south end of the park .

Castle Park

The landscape garden in the English style from the 19th century emerged from a swampy Innau forest. The 15 hectare park covers areas in the municipalities of Brixlegg and Reith im Alpbachtal, whereby the eastern part of the municipality of Brixlegg was placed under protection as a natural monument in 1961 , the western part of the municipality of Reith in 1972 ( ND_5_38 and ND_5-39 ). Due to changes in the municipal boundaries, most of the complex now belongs to Reith, except for a small plot. The park is one of the most important garden architectural monuments in Austria and is mentioned in the Monument Protection Act ( No. 41 in the appendix to Section 1, Paragraph 12 of the DMSG ). It includes four artificially created ponds, wide lawns and around 40 different tree species.

Others

In 1957, Matzen Castle was used as a filming location for both The Twins from Zillertal and The Simple Girl .
