history

With the relocation of the royal residence from Merano to Innsbruck in 1420 by Duke Friedrich IV , nobles and wealthy citizens built numerous residences in the vicinity of the city. The castle was built by Christian Tänzl around 1460. The Tänzl family had become rich through the Schwaz silver mining and owned u. a. also Tratzberg Castle . Around 1480 Tänzl sold the castle to the Tyrolean sovereign Sigismund the rich in coins . After the resignation (1490) the property is at Kaiser I. Maximilian passed. He raised the Weiherburg to an aristocratic residence in 1493 , gave it this name and bequeathed it to his Chancellor Oswald von Hausen.

In 1560, Veit Langenmantel , a citizen of Augsburg , bought the Weiherburg and had a frescoed extension, the Langenmantel Hall, built. Archduke Ferdinand II had the castle expanded and created a zoo, the forerunner of today's Alpine Zoo. After several changes of ownership, the city of Innsbruck took over the residence in 1911, which was restored from 1976–1978 under Mayor Alois Lugger . Today the Weiherburg serves as a representative building for cultural and social events, as well as a restaurant.

The St. Anna Castle Chapel was consecrated between 1481 and 1513 and decorated with frescoes by Josef Strickner around 1798 . The altarpiece shows the Virgin Mary between St. Anna and St. Christopher.
