Joseph Leopold Strickner was born as the elder son of the painter Johann Michael Strickner  in Innsbruck. He was initially trained by his father, after his early death by Anton Kirchebner . He then became an assistant to Joseph Schöpf and worked on his frescoes in Asbach , St. Johann im Ahrntal , Wattens and the Innsbruck Servitenkirche . In 1764 he worked as an employee of Josef Adam Mölk on the frescoes in the church in Frohnleiten . From around 1770 he independently created frescoes in various Tyrolean churches, as well as panel paintings, portraits and copper engravings. He developed a particular fondness for grisaille painting in fresco, oil and watercolor. Strickner's works are in a late classicist style. His topographical views of Innsbruck and the surrounding area, which have often been reproduced, are significant.
