Anras Castle

The Anras Nursing House is a former administrative building and summer residence of the Bishops of Brixen in the mountain village of Anras and one of the most important secular architectural monuments in East Tyrol .

location

The village is located in the Lienz district in Hochpustertal between Lienz and Sillian on a sun terrace nestled between the Lienz Dolomites in the south and the Villgraten mountains in the north.

history

Anras owes the nickname "East Tyrol's granary" to the extremely mild climate. The bishops of Bressanone have already appreciated this since the 12th century and had a summer residence built for the episcopal summer retreat. From 1200 to 1803 Anras was a summer residence of the bishops of Brixen. In 1236, Emperor Friedrich II granted the diocese of Brixen additional secular power over the territory of Anras. The Brixen monastery enjoyed general immunity. In Anras, the administration of goods was able to develop together with the jurisdiction.

Over time, the estate expanded from Anras to Obertilliach and to the Lienzer Klause . In 1754 the palace was expanded in the baroque style. Over the centuries, today's nursing home Anras developed from the original building to administer the property there and the administration of justice in the Anras area. The cultural jewel was bought and restored by the Messerschmitt Foundation in 1991 . Valuable paneling , the court rooms from 1755, the granary and all other rooms can be viewed again today. The Anras nursing home is today an object of identification for the entire region of East and South Tyrol and a model of modern monument preservation. In 2014 the building was closed to the public.

museum

The Anras nursing home has been used as a museum since 1997. There were u. a. a permanent exhibition by Paul Flora and a history-related court museum in the house. There was also a seasonal focus through international special exhibitions and events.
