Ilsung , Illsung , later also Ilsung von Tratzberg , is the surname of an old Augsburg patrician family, one branch of which rose to the baron status.

history

The family is divided into two main tribes, the "Ilsung auf dem Stein" , which died out in 1409 and the "Ilsung bei St. Johann" or "Ilsung von Tratzberg" , which survived after 1409 alone.

They appear in Augsburg from 1288, and Konrad I († 1337), named in 1319, is the first representative of the family that can be safely classified there. His son "Ulrich bei St. Moritz" († 1364) was verifiable in the council from 1353 and in 1362 officiated as a master builder. As a long-distance trader, he achieved great prosperity. After his only daughter entered a monastery, he spent a large part of his fortune on charity. From 1355 he donated four altars with vicarages at St. Jakob , St. Moritz and at the cathedral, and donated donations to many other churches. With a capital of 1240 pounds pfennigs he endowed the first donation for the poor in Augsburg.

Nevertheless, a rich inheritance, the Mannlehen and the later weavers' house , fell to Konrad III. († 1391), son of a brother. Since the 1350s he called himself “on the stone” after his newly acquired residence, the “house on the stone” with the St. Leonhard chapel (now Karolinenstrasse 21). Konrad Ilsung III. is attested as a merchant, has been one of the leading political figures since the 1360s and has served five times as town caretaker (mayor).

This family line died out with his son Johann II († 1409). Only a few days after his father's death, he was elected city caretaker for the first time and he was part of the imperial city's closest leadership circle until his death. His sons died before him. The "house on the stone" with the Leonhard chapel became the ancestral home of the Welsers from 1422 . It went down in World War II. The valuable Gothic vaults of the Leonhard Chapel were saved and built in 1965 in the Fuggerei's rebuilt senior citizens' building (basement). Today the rentable room serves as a stylish setting for conferences, receptions, lectures and concerts. According to the historians Mark Häberlein and Johannes Burkhardt in their work “The Welsers: New Research on the History and Culture of the Upper German Trading House” (2002), the chapel vault dates from around 1350 and is likely to go back to the Ilsung. An existing keystone with the Welser coat of arms was probably only installed later.

The brothers "Ulrich Ilsung bei Unser Frauen Brüder" († 1395 or 1396) and "Konrad I. Ilsung bei St. Johann" († 1401) lived in the house of "Ulrich bei St. Moritz ” from the “ auf dem Stein ”line . He calls the brothers his unions, which is why there was undoubtedly a relationship. They too were merchants. Konrad I was elected town ranger in 1374.

His son Sebastian I († 1425) officiated six times as city caretaker from 1405. Its murder by Peter Rehlinger led to serious conflicts. After the perpetrator was ostracized in 1425, the deceased's relatives had to leave Augsburg in 1427, among them his nephew Georg Ilsung I († 1437 or 1438), who returned to the city in 1432.

Georg I sons, Sebastian II († 1469) and Sigmund I († 1500), were among the advisers of Emperor Friedrich III. Sebastian II undertook a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 1446, probably in connection with a diplomatic mission on behalf of Pope Felix V and his son Duke Ludwig von Savoyen , the course of which he later described.

Sebastian III. († 1525), son of Sigmund I, was a member of the Sodalitas litteraria Augustana and judge of the Swabian League . In 1474 he donated a terracotta Madonna for the St. Peter am Perlach church in Augsburg , which has been preserved to this day. Together with his brother Achilles († 1530) he gave up his citizenship and entered the ducal Bavarian service. Her sister Anna Ilsung married the Mayor of Augsburg (Stadtpfleger) Georg Langenmantel vom Sparren († 1521). They became the parents of the Bavarian privy councilor Ulrich Langenmantel vom Sparren († 1570) and his spiritual brother Christoph Langenmantel († 1538), who helped Martin Luther escape from Augsburg in 1518.

Achilles' son Melchior I († 1565) served as Augsburg mayor several times between 1551 and 1567. His brother Georg Ilsung († 1580) was a financial agent of the Habsburgs , chief imperial warlord in the Schmalkaldic War , 1550 Governor of Upper and Lower Swabia , Reichspfennig Master , 1568 Imperial Knight , Hofpfalzgraf and Privy Councilor . He acquired Tratzberg Castle in Tyrol and was one of the most important family members. His sons Markus († 1583) and Friedrich († 1587), who succeeded him in the office of bailiff, were raised to barons and now called themselves Ilsung von Tratzberg. Her sister Anna (1549–1601) married Jakob Fugger III.

Christoph Ilsung († 1594), son of Melchior I, was several times mayor and city caretaker and represented Augsburg at the Landsberger Bund . His brother Johann Achilles († 1609) gave up his citizenship and became Reichspfennigmeister and Hofrat .

With Johann Melchior II. († 1695), the great-grandson of Christoph Ilsung, the family provided an Augsburg city caretaker for the last time. The Ilsungs were strictly Catholic and Christoph in particular campaigned for the Jesuits to settle in Augsburg, where they founded the St. Salvator College .

After a picture of Mary in the basilica of St. Ulrich and Afra , which bears a coat of arms of the patrician family Ilsung, the unknown painter is called " Master of the Ilsung Madonna " . Around 1475 he appeared several times as an artist in Augsburg.

In the St. Anna Chapel of the Augsburg Cathedral there is a winged altar decorated with coats of arms donated by the Ilsung, an inscription plaque and a family coat of arms stone; it used to be called "Ilsung Chapel" .

In Augsburg, Ilsungstrasse is named after the family.
