The Weberhaus is the former guild house of the weavers in Augsburg . The historicizing building erected in 1913 replaced a late Gothic predecessor at roughly the same location. It is located in the city center on Moritzplatz .

history

Previous construction

Built in 1389, it served as the seat of the weavers' guild until its dissolution in 1548 and was a central point of the medieval textile trade in Augsburg. The first weaver's house was made of stone and wood and was bought from the Illsung family. After a renovation, the weavers use the building to distribute imported cotton to the members. Even then, the house was painted in color. Between 1605 and 1607, the Augsburg city painter and mayor Matthias Kager decorated the outer wall with frescoes.

In April 1863 the weaver's house was auctioned and then completely redesigned inside. The wooden paneling of the guild room, painted by Peter Kaltenhoff in 1457, was also removed. It has been owned by the Bavarian National Museum since then . At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Augsburg bought the house back.

New building

Since the old weaver's house stood in the way of a new route on the Bürgermeister-Fischer-Strasse, it was demolished despite massive protests (including by Gabriel von Seidl ) and replaced in 1913 by a new, similarly shaped building in an advanced building line, according to plans by the architect Otto Holzer , replaced. Before the demolition, remnants of the original frescoes were found on the outer facade (today in the Maximilian Museum ).

For the new building, the painter August Brandes took over the reconstruction of the old facade painting based on templates that he had made from the original in 1903. Between 1935 and 1936, Josef Hengge and Otto Michael Schmitt painted it again in a completely different style. After the weaver's house was destroyed in the war and rebuilt true to the original in 1959, Professor Otto Michael Schmitt from Augsburg repainted the facade. The interior layout of the rooms was completely changed while maintaining the window proportions. Due to strong environmental influences (environmental pollution), the frescoes had to be renewed in 1981.

In a devastating fire in the roof structure in 2004, significant parts of the listed building and the exterior painting were affected. In 2007 and 2008, the state before the fire was restored with the help of a support association.

Guild room

The ceiling and wall cladding of the former guild room, the last remnant of the old weaver's house and since 1864 in the Bavarian National Museum, is considered to be one of the most extensive late Gothic picture cycles north of the Alps. The barrel vault shows scenes with verses from the Old Testament as well as episodes from the life of Alexander the Great . On the north wall, electors, emperors, six of the good heroes and scenes from the story of creation are depicted. The east wall is painted with Jewish prophets and pagan philosophers.
