August Brandes (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

August Brandes (born October 11, 1872 in Gifhorn , † August 5, 1948 in Meersburg ) was a German fresco painter , restorer and teacher of decorative painting .

Live and act

August Brandes first learned the profession of facade painter and then attended the arts and crafts school in Hanover . From 1892 he was a student at the Academy in Munich . After graduation he became a teacher for decorative painting at a technical college, probably in Munich.

From 1902 onwards, the city of Augsburg had the fading wall paintings of town houses, churches and other public buildings restored at the suggestion of Friedrich von Thiersch . August Brandes was commissioned to take stock and restore the Augsburg frescoes. Brandes first reconstructed the existing structure and mostly documented it with tempera paintings. These originals are now in the possession of the municipal art collections in Augsburg and the architecture collection of the Technical University of Munich . Hardly anything of August Brande's works has survived. Either the painted buildings were destroyed or the colors of his frescoes faded after just a few decades and were repainted or whitewashed.
