Chad is a male given name that is mostly used in the United States .

The origin and meaning of the name are not exactly known. Possibly it is a variation of the English name Ceadda , which is said to go back to the Welsh word cad for fight or battle. But it could also have developed as an independent name from the abbreviation of the first name Chadwick .

A bearer of the old English name Ceadda is Saint Chad (* around 623, † 672), who was second bishop of York from 664 to 669.
