Chad Oliver

Symmes Chadwick Oliver (* thirtieth March 1928 in Cincinnati , Ohio ; † 10. August 1993 in Austin , Texas ) was an American science fiction - and Western - writer .

Life

Even as a teenager, Oliver was interested in SF literature, and in 1939 a letter from him appeared in a fanzine for the first time . In 1943 the family moved to Crystal City , Texas, where Oliver graduated from high school.

Oliver studied English and anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA) since 1946, graduating from both subjects with a master’s degree in 1952 . His thesis in English dealt scientifically with science fiction.

In 1959 he became assistant professor for anthropology at UTA, and in 1968 he became a full professor . From 1967 to 1971 and from 1980 to 1985 he was chairman of the anthropological department. In 1961 he received his PhD from UCLA with a thesis on cultural transmission and social structure among the Indians of the Great Plains . In addition to Indian culture, he did research on the Kamba as an employee of Walter Goldschmidt in Kenya . He has received several awards for his teaching work. After his death, the UTA College of Liberal Arts established the Chad Oliver Honors Program Scholarship .

In 1948 Oliver's first science fiction short story appeared , in 1950 he was able to sell the first story. His most tester Roman Mists of the Dawn (dt. Menschheitsdämmerung ) appeared in 1952. In all, he wrote more than 60 SF short stories, some novels. In 1958 his first western short story appeared. In 1967 he received the Spur Award for his western The Wolf is My Brother .

Oliver had been married to Betty Jane Jenkins since November 1, 1952 and had two children.

Oliver was jazz - pianist and avid fly fisherman .
