Anton (Antonio) Schrafl (born January 19, 1873 in Lugano , † January 3, 1945 in Bern ) was a Swiss engineer and general director of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).

Life

Anton Schrafl was born in Lugano as the son of the railway engineer from Tyrol and later honorary citizen of Bellinzona Antonio Schrafl (1841-1916). The father was naturalized in Switzerland in 1888 and was director of the Gotthard Railway Company from 1902 to 1909 .

Schrafl jun. studied civil engineering at the Polytechnic in Zurich. Here he joined the Corps Tigurinia in 1893 . In 1896 he passed his diploma exam. From 1896 to 1898 he worked for the building department of the Canton of Zurich and in the U. Bosshard engineering office in Zurich. In 1898 he became the construction manager of the new Reichenau-Ilanz line, and in 1902 he was assistant to the chief engineer of the Gotthard Railway. In the course of the nationalization of the Gotthard Railway, he became deputy chief engineer of District V and in 1911 a member of the management of District V of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). In 1921/22 he acted as district director. In 1922 Schrafl became a member of the General Management and in 1926 President of the SBB. In 1938 he resigned from this office and was director of the Central Office for International Rail Transport in Bern from 1938 to 1943. He found his final resting place in the Friedental cemetery .

Awards

The Polytechnic in Zurich ( Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ) awarded him an honorary doctorate as Dr. sc. techn. hc
