Eduardo de la Torre

Eduardo de la Torre (born December 4, 1962 in Guadalajara , Jalisco ) is a former Mexican football player who was almost exclusively under contract with his hometown club Chivas Guadalajara . The center forward, also known by the nickname "Yayo" (Grandpa), is a son of the Chivas legend Javier de la Torre , who coached the Guadalajara club between 1960 and 1973 and won the championship five times during this period.

Career

In the late 1980s, Yayo de la Torre was the best attacking player of his long-time club CD Guadalajara and, along with goalkeeper Javier Ledesma, an idol of Chivas fans. In the four seasons from 1986/87 to 1989/90 he scored a total of 52 goals and was the most successful goalscorer of his team in each season. With the 16 goals in the 1986/87 season and his two goals in the final second leg against Cruz Azul (final result 3-0, first leg 1: 2) Yayo had a decisive share in winning the first Guadalajara championship after 17 lean years. With the exception of his last season, when he was under contract with the Querétaro Fútbol Club , Yayo spent the rest of his active career (1982-1993) in the service of Chivas Guadalajara.

Yayo de la Torre made his international debut on August 8, 1984 in Dublin against Ireland (0-0) and came to a total of seven international appearances by the end of 1984. Although he played six of these games in full and was always represented in the attack line, he did not score a single goal on that occasion. After that, he was not called up to the national team for a long time and thus also missed the 1986 World Cup , which was held in his own country . De la Torre completed his other ten international appearances between March 1987 and February 1988. Yayo scored eight goals and once even three in one game in the 6-0 win against Bermuda on May 13, 1987.

After his active career, Eduardo de la Torre worked as a coach for various clubs, including his hometown club Guadalajara in 2003.
