Chad Silver (born March 12, 1969 in Brandon , Manitoba , † December 3, 1998 in Zurich ) was a Swiss - Canadian ice hockey player .

Career

The son of a Canadian and a Swiss woman began his career in the Canadian Junior Western Hockey League with the Brandon Wheat Kings and then played for the Regina Pats in the same league.

North American players with a Swiss passport , who brought a certain talent, did not cost a transfer fee and did not burden the foreigner contingent , were very popular with the Swiss clubs and so Silver moved to the then B-division team HC Sierre in Switzerland for the 1989/90 season . This was followed by promotion to the top division and after the immediate relegation, the move to Friborg-Gottéron . With this he reached the play-off finals three times in a row , but all of them ended in defeat for Friborg.

During the 1993/94 season, Silver also played three international matches for the Swiss national ice hockey team .

After two seasons at EV Zug and one at SC Herisau, he switched to the ZSC Lions . After he failed to show up for training on December 3, 1998, teammates went to his apartment to find him dead. As it turned out, Silver died of heart failure . On December 9, 1998, a funeral service was held in Zurich's Paulus Church, attended by over 1,500 people.

A statue with the number 23 (Silver's number on the back of the ZSC) and his nickname "Sly" by artist Kurt Laurenz-Metzler reminds of Chad Silver in front of the Zurich Hallenstadion . His shirt number is no longer issued by the ZSC.
