Kalvö (also Kalvöarna , German Kalbsinsel ) is the name of an island in the Swedish lake Vänern . Kalvö is located off the northern tip of the largest Vänern island Torsö and belongs to the municipality of Mariestad .

Kalvö emerged from the two islands of Hemön and Österön through post-glacial land uplift. In addition to a narrow land bridge, the two parts of the island are also connected by a stone bridge. This comes from the time when extensive agriculture was still practiced there, but it was discontinued in 1963.

Kalvö skärgård

The Kalvö archipelago is part of the Mariestadt archipelago and is a nature reserve that covers most of the island. It is also a bird sanctuary and part of the European Natura 2000 network .

The many bays on the island are popular with bathers. The agricultural buildings are used as holiday homes.
