history

There was a hermit hermitage on Kalvarienberg as early as the 8th century. In 1381 the church of St. Margaret was first mentioned in a document. The church of St. Margaretha was on the banks of the Danube, where it was destroyed several times by floods and fires and demolished in 1784. From 1651 to 1654 the Jesuit priest Philbert Boccabella rebuilt the Kalvarienbergkirche, which was consecrated on October 3, 1688 by the Provost of Passau, Franz Anton von Losenstein . The Maria Thal Chapel and the nave were built between 1651 and 1654. In 1659 the mayor of Linz, Ludwig Preller, had a burial chapel and the Heilbrunn chapel built on the Danube . In 1898 the Franciscan Order opened a hospice, which the Trinitarians took over in 1937 and left in 1976. In 1942 the parish of St. Margarethen became a branch of the Linz parish church, and has been independent since 1980.

Calvary Church

Maria Thal Chapel

The Maria Thal Chapel and the nave

The decoration of the transversely oval dome was largely made of stucco. The fresco in the dome depicts, among other things, St. Jacob , Adam and Eve , the Mother of God and the Holy Spirit. A Gothic image of grace from the 14th century is significant in terms of art history .

Longhouse

The nave on the slope of the Calvary was built on eight pillars. Neither outside nor inside are decorations or stucco. The nave was temporarily used as a prayer house, which is why its entrance can be opened directly to the Maria Thal chapel .

Holy Sepulcher Chapel
