The Cambodia chipmunk ( Tamiops rodolphii ) is a species of squirrel from the tree chipmunk genus ( Tamiops ). It occurs in the mainland part of Southeast Asia .

features

The Cambodian chipmunk reaches a head-torso length of about 11.7 to 12 centimeters with a weight of about 56 grams. The tail is 10.7 to 12.2 inches long and is thus about as long as the rest of the body. The structure of the skull corresponds to that of other species of the genus. All species of the genus have a a maxillary per half incisor tooth formed incisor (incisor) to which a tooth gap ( diastema follows). This is followed by two premolars and three molars . In contrast, only one premolar is formed in the lower jaw. In total, the animals have a set of 22 teeth.

distribution

The coastal chipmunk occurs in eastern Thailand as well as in the south of Laos , Vietnam and Cambodia .

Way of life

Little information is available about the Cambodian chipmunk lifestyle. In its area of distribution it occurs in almost all tree populations, especially in evergreen deciduous forests and in mixed forests but also in bushes and gardens. It is largely tree-living and leaps from tree to tree, it feeds mainly on young buds, fruits and insects.

Systematics

The Cambodian chipmunk is classified as an independent species within the genus of the tree chipmunk ( Tamiops ), which consists of four species. The first scientific description comes from Henri Milne Edwards from 1867, who described the species using individuals from Vietnam near Saigon .

Within the species, together with the nominate form, two subspecies are distinguished:

  • Tamiops r. rodolphii : nominate form, occurs in south-east Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The color of the animals is cloudy brown on the head and neck, the belly is yellow to orange.
  • Tamiops r. elbeli : The subspecies occurs exclusively in the provinces of Chaiyaphum and Khon Kaen in Thailand. It has a light yellow to orange head and neck and clearly yellow-brown stripes on the back along the black central stripe.

Status, threat and protection

The Cambodian chipmunk is classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). This is justified by the large distribution area and the frequent occurrence of the species in all suitable habitats. There is no known potential threat to the survival of this species.
