Kamla Persad-Bissessar (born April 22, 1954 in Siparia ) is a Trinidadian politician. She was Prime Minister of her country from 2010 to 2015 .

Early years

Persad-Bissesar attended Mohess Road Hindu School, Erin Road Presbyterian School, and Siparia Union Presbyterian School. After finishing school, Persad-Bissessar studied law at the University of the West Indies, among others .

Career

Persad-Bissessar has been a member of the parliament of Trinidad and Tobago since 1995. From 1995 to 1996 and 2001 she was Attorney General of the country.

On May 24, 2010, she won the House of Representatives elections with her three-party coalition, People's Partnership. Persad-Bissessar is chair of the United National Congress (UNC) party. As head of government, she replaced her predecessor Patrick Manning . In November 2011, she announced at a press conference that security forces had foiled an attack on her and other members of the government. In the course of subsequent investigations, 17 people were arrested, but had to be released in December due to a lack of evidence. The background to the affair was never clarified. The opposition and some media expressed the suspicion that the allegations had served to extend a state of emergency that was in force at the time beyond the planned end. In 2012 she was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman , an award from the Indian state for deserving persons of the Indian diaspora . In 2015, her party lost the House of Representatives election . Two days after the election, her successor, Keith Rowley , was sworn in. In the 2020 election , she ran again as the top candidate of the UNC and narrowly lost, again against the PNM under Rowley.

Private

Persad-Bissessar is married and has one son. She came from a Hindu family, but was baptized Baptist . Her husband is Presbyterian .
