Canals in Ohio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ohio canal system was created under Governor Jeremiah Morrow in the US state of Ohio in the 1820s and 1830s .

It essentially comprised the north-south connections between Lake Erie and the Ohio River :

as well as various branch channels ( feeders ).

The canals were primarily used for freight transport and flourished until the 1860s when the railways were built and successfully competed as a faster means of transport. Large parts of the canal system were destroyed by a flood in 1913 and not rebuilt.
