Kanō Sansetsu
Kanō Sansetsu ( Japanese 狩 野 山 雪 ; 1590 - May 1, 1651 , real name: Senga Mitsuie ( 千 賀 光 家 )) was an important Japanese painter of the early Edo period . He successfully continued the Kyō (Kyōto) branch of the Kanō School .
life and work
Sansetsu joined the workshop of Kanō Sanraku , who adopted him as a gifted student and later gave him his daughter as a wife.
Around 1629 Sansetsu worked, together with other painters from his school, on the scroll entitled "History of the Taima Temple " ( 當 麻 寺 縁 起 絵 巻 , Taima-dera engi emaki ), which is now in the Nara National Museum.
Around 1631 he and Sanraku were commissioned to decorate the Tenkyū-in ( 天球 院 ), a sub-temple of Myōshin-ji in Kyōto. Around 1632 he carried out a work entitled "The Great Confucianists in Different Ages " ( 歴 世 大儒 図 , Rekishi daiju-zu ) for the Hall of Confucius in Edo, center of Confucianism in Japan, under the direction of the Hayashi family.
In 1647 Sansetsu was commissioned by the court aristocrat Kujō Yukiie ( 九 条 幸 家 ; 1586-1665) to paint two panels to complement the "Thirty-three Kannon" in Tōfuku-ji in Kyōto. He then received the honorary title of Hokkyō.
Sansetsu was an eccentric person, gifted as a composer. He coined the Kanō style of the Kan'i period (1624-1644). His best-known work is the screen with the title "Water birds on a snowy bank" ( 雪 汀 水禽 図 , Settei suikin-zu ). Sansetsu was a connoisseur of the art scene and left a draft of an art history, ( 本 朝 画 史 , Honchō-gashi ). He is buried on the Sennyū-ji in Kyoto.
Sansetsu also led the stage names Tōgenshi ( 桃源 子 ), Dasokuken ( 蛇足 軒 ) and Shōhaku Sanjin ( 松柏 山人 ). In everyday life he was called Heishirō ( 平 四郎 ) or Nuidonosuke ( 縫 殿 助 ).
